Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the Senior Director, Program Management will be accountable for agreed project deliverables on assigned projects, on time and within budget. Although reporting to the CMO, the incumbent for this position will have matrix responsibility for leadership and direct interactions with the CEO. These projects will span all phases, from pre-clinical development through to commercialization and launch. (S)he will provide leadership to cross-functional strategic project development teams, responsible for the global development and execution of the project strategy. This position will also be responsible for working closely with Chief Business Officer and Chief Medical Officer on Projects managed with business partner(s)

The Senior Director, Program Management will be responsible for managing both in house clinical programs and programs in various stages of development with partners. The Director, Program Management will be responsible for working closely with the Project Leaders on establishing the strategic direction of the program, managing Project Team resources, managing program team meetings and managing 2 Project Coordinators assigned to support the programs.

In addition to managing individual projects, the Senior Director, Program Management will line manage two Project Coordinators, each of whom will be accountable for scheduling team meetings, reporting minutes, preparing project Gantt Charts and budgets, tracking key activities updating project plans, staffing and budgets accordingly and managing project dashboards. The Senior Director, Program Management will mentor and guide the Project Coordinators in these activities, provide alignment and direction of programs and drive overall deliverables of key programs individually and align programs with the overall company strategic plan.

Key result areas (major duties, accountabilities and responsibilities):

  • Provides overall alignment across all functions for deliverables on the key projects in the organization
  • Insures alignment of all programs across the organization with “best fit” to the overall strategic plan
  • Drives an organization that is focused on delivery of high quality programs as planned on time and on budget
  • Drives a matrix decision based organization to develop project plans that are coordinated and deliverable.
  • Build team effectiveness and leads the PT to develop and achieve its goals through the people/functions represented on the team.
  • Negotiates with function heads to obtain functional deliverables, and is empowered to bring issues to governance committees to remove roadblocks.
  • Drives innovation by challenging the status quo and driving continuous improvement of drug development processes and outcomes.
  • Challenges and holds accountable all functions on the PT to ensure that all issues and questions are addressed, and that line function input into strategy and plans meets the needs of the project.
  • Proactively escalates critical issues to senior management when appropriate.
  • Identifies potential issues and leads contingency planning and problem-solving by applying appropriate analytical tools and techniques.
  • Leads resolution of conflict at the PT, for senior management levels and/or joint steering committees for co-developed projects.
  • Responsible for overall budget and project plan deliverables.
  • May lead multiple projects depending on the stage that the projects are in and their priority level.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Leads the communication of strategy, issues and plans to the governance internal committees. In collaboration with the CMO, leads these communications to alliance partners and other key stakeholders.
  • Works with functional management to: secure the required resources for project success, assign functional leads within the PT, align goals and objectives of PT members with PT goals and objectives, coach and guide PT members, provide input for performance evaluation of PT members.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • An advanced Degree in Life Sciences (Ph.D., or Pharm. D) is required, or an MBA with equivalent work experience.
  • At least 10 years of professional experience with a minimum of 7 years in pharmaceutical arena.
  • Thorough knowledge of the drug development process is required and familiarity with pharmaceutical portfolio risk management is required.
  • At least 5 years’ experience as a project manager in a late stage clinical trial and commercialization environment is required.

Core competencies:

  • Demonstrated/proven leadership role within a global multi-functional matrix organization is required.
  • Demonstrated influence, negotiation and conflict resolution skills, including the ability to influence and align without clear reporting authority are strongly desired.
  • Strong problem solving skills is a must for developing creative solutions and meeting project objectives.
  • Experience in strategic thinking and contingency planning is required.
  • Good understanding of requirements for successful commercialization of a new product.
  • Very strong interpersonal skills to bridge scientific and business participants for negotiating timelines, resources and effective international collaborations.
  • Good oral/written communication skills, allowing effective interactions with all levels of the organization is required.
  • Critical and objective interpretation of scientific and commercial information is critical for success in this position. Solid analytical skills for integrating and interpreting interdisciplinary project information.
  • A high degree of organizational awareness and understanding of change management is preferred.
